Stress and Relaxation

There are two symbols for Scorpio, the scorpion and the phoenix. Both of these creatures help us to understand human Scorpios. A scorpion is a solitary creature, specially adapted to live in the extreme conditions and intensity of the desert where very little other life finds it possible to survive. Unlike bulls you will not find Scorpions together drinking at the water hole - when you find a Scorpion it is alone. The scorpion is infamous for its deadly sting, which in the face of adversity or extreme heat it sometimes uses to sting itself to death. Similarly, human Scorpions are loners, they prize privacy and reveal their innermost thoughts and motivations to no one. Many parts of their personality are strictly off limits - trespassers WILL be prosecuted. Like the scorpion, the human Scorpio is tough and well able to survive life circumstances which would terrify or kill other star signs, in fact the Scorpio thrives on these conditions. Self destructive behaviour can be the undoing of the Scorpio: obsessive and compulsive behaviour can make them their own worst enemy.

The other symbol for Scorpio is the Phoenix, the bird who rises from the ashes of its own destruction to soar through the sky again - an extremely powerful and emotive image to befit Scorpio. Scorpions have the awesome strength to fight back from health, mental or emotional breakdowns, reinventing themselves in the process and emerging a new person full of courage and ready to tackle the world again. Scorpios have such power and strength of character that once they have put their mind to it, nothing is impossible. They are able to cure themselves through the power of they mind - so Scorpios, don't just believe you have the power, KNOW IT! Almost all Scorpios will undergo some major crisis or transition period during their lives - perhaps many (life is cruel in the desert). In other cases Scorpios may actively seek it via their attraction to danger (most Scorpios attract strange and unusual events into their lives, usually quite unconsciously): it is as if they need to seek the boundaries of experience and to test the extent of their own nature in order to fulfil their purpose. Scorpios have deep unswerving emotional power, the rulership of Pluto adds a compulsion to reach down and bring up new life from the depths of old. Scorpios rise above their suffering and the darkness of their lives just like the phoenix.

There is a story about a scorpion:

A scorpion wanted to cross pond, so because scorpions can't swim (of course), the scorpion asked a frog for a lift. The frog said, "Sure, as long as you don't sting me!" The scorpion was deeply hurt at the insinuation that he would think of stinging the frog. Anyway, halfway across the pond, the scorpion stung the frog. As they both sunk to their watery deaths, the frog said, "Why did you do that?". To which the Scorpio answered, "Because you thought I would anyway." This story illustrates how the Scorpio can become self-destructive when he or she is badly hurt.

It must have been a Scorpio who said, "To err is human, to forgive is not our policy!". This is not totally fair as a Scorpio will forgive, however Scorpios have exceptional memories and they will never forget, especially an emotional hurt. Scorpions take things very seriously, their attitude to life is intense and they feel passionately about every thing, this all means that it is hard for them to switch off and take a "water of a ducks back attitude". Taking things seriously often leads to obsession and an inability to let go, this causes the Scorpion much stress. If there is something a Scorpio is not, it is detached - to a Scorpio everything matters terribly. The goal for a Scorpio is to try and develop a more objective approach to things and to learn to detach themselves a little more - this does take time and effort.

The worst danger to a Scorpios health is negative emotions which are left to fester in the psyche. Scorpios are naturally good psychologists as they understand human nature and human weaknesses; having said this the best thing a Scorpio can do is have a visit to a councellor or psychologist who they can talk to in confidence and who can help them to release that dangerous pent up rage and emotion. Scorpios often find it hard to move on and to put things behind them there is a tendency to brood and bear grudges over the things that have happened, stewing. Sometimes Scorpios need to realise that some problems can never be resolved, only outgrown. However it is essential for Scorpions to be able to 'forgive' their persecutors, and find some way to release their anger over the circumstances of their lives: pent up resentment and bitterness causes noxious chemicals to build up in the body which can cause a mental or health breakdown. Sometimes a breakdown of some sort is the catalyst for psychological renewal – i.e. a breakdown forces the Scorpio to reassess his life and make changes which will allow him to emerge a new and revitalised person who is not held back by debilitating negative emotion (recovery is contingent on changing attitudes and cleansing the psyche) - the phoenix emerges from the flames once more.

Another must for Scorpios is their privacy; they hate to be copied or watched and often they will live in a house which is concealed from public view in some way. Too much exposure causes them stress. To relax, Scorpios must be able to retreat into a quite and dark place, often they decorate their houses in dark colours, like dark reds and browns along with mahogany and heavy material which keep out too much sunlight and noise. Scorpios love water - participating in water sports or just spending time sitting by a country stream soothes them. Murder mysteries or detective novels are another favourite and a sure way to get they mind off other things.
